Sysco Corporation (NYSE: SYY), the leading global foodservice distribution company, just announced an exclusive partnership that will deliver SAVRpak’s patented food preservation technology to independent and local chain restaurants nationwide. Through their agreement, Sysco will add SAVRpak “freshness packs” to its Cutting Edge Solutions platform, making this technology immediately available to order. Developed by a rocket scientist, SAVRpak is a frozen peel-and-stick patch that removes moisture from the air of a food container keeping it away from food and ensuring hot and cold food stays fresh and crisp in transit. 

                                                                                                                                                                                      

Beginning July 7, Chatham University in Pittsburgh will host its second annual Grain Box program as part of its Center for Regional Agriculture, Food, and Transformation (CRAFT) initiatives. This year’s box is a “Breakfast Box” featuring a variety of locally sourced and produced grain products, including a the Taste of PA biscuit mix developed by graduate student workers in Chatham’s Food Studies programs and the Falk School of Sustainability. CRAFT’s grains-related work, funded by the USDA Local Food Promotion Program grant, supports local grain processors and producers in seizing a currently untapped market opportunity to grow and sell local grains and grain products in Western Pennsylvania. 

                                                                                                                                                                                      

Upfield US today announced a new grant program, Plant Grants, aimed at promoting plant-based eating through charitable funding, education, and mentorship. This first year is being sponsored by Violife®, an Upfield brand and portfolio of 100% vegan cheeses and spreads, in collaboration with legendary hip-hop artist and long-time vegan, RZA. The 2021 Plant Grants program will focus on helping community-based Black-owned restaurants recover from the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic recognizing that these businesses are often the economic and cultural centers of their communities. The program will provide funding to support re-investment in the business, an introduction to plant-based ingredients, and coaching on menu development from two plant-based chef pioneers, Lemel Durrah and Laricia Chandler to inspire Black-owned restaurants to add more plant-based dishes to their menus or convert well-loved recipes to plant-based.
