What’s Your Catering Legacy? Part I

As many of you know, Mike Roman was a catering industry visionary. Like all of us, he identified a business need and filled it. While he was operating his family’s catering business, The Mixing Bowl, Mike realized that caterers needed a consulting and educational resource. He started Catersource before the Internet was popular and communicated with his clients by phone and newsletter.

Here, Mike Roman speaks at Catersource 2006.

While I only crossed paths with Mike a few times, one of my oldest clients had more extensive experience with Mike. I’ll let him tell you about it: “My wife and I had a fast food restaurant in a university area. Naturally, summers were slower because students—the majority of our customers—went home for the summer. We identified picnics and tailgate parties as a new revenue stream and booked quite a few.

“One rainy Saturday, we loaded up our one and only truck with picnic food for 150 guests. When we arrived at the event site, the person who had ordered the food told us to go home because the weather was bad. He said he would reschedule the event, but he was adamant that it just was not happening that day. We were young and inexperienced; we were working without sufficient contracts, and had only taken a minimal deposit for that event.

“I was extremely aggravated and I remembered that there was a guy in Chicago who called himself a catering consultant. His name was Mike Roman and I made an appointment to see him.”

In my next blog, I’ll share with you the many ways that I learned from Mike Roman and how he helped me—much like Catersource consultants can help you—build a better and more profitable business.
