Cocktail trends for 2015 and beyond

Salty goodness

A standard salt-rimmed margarita is one thing, but a few drops of saline within a beverage will pop the other flavors, as only salt is wont to do. Drop a scant saline solution into a cocktail or sprinkle colored salt atop the creamy first layer of an egg-foamy whiskey sour. I’ve been making a drink called Grinch Nog from the book, North Star Cocktails, for a few years. A daring concoction of gin, absinthe, whiskey, and maraschino liqueur—plus a few drops of saline solution (4:1), this is a complex and winning beverage that will thrill the most sophisticated of imbibers.

Created by Elizabeth Mickiewicz, winner of the July 2015 House of Angostura’s Cocktail Challenge, “The Lost Days” has a secret weapon: saline solution, which enhances the gin and Lillet Blanc base. Note the dehydrated pineapple flower garnish—dehydrated garnishes are trending as well, especially citrus wheels.
