Candle and Lighting Options for Outdoor Weddings

While lighting options for indoor weddings and outdoor weddings can certainly vary, there are a number of considerations to keep in mind while designing an event space for maximum effect. Outdoor weddings certainly carry their own benefits and risks, but it’s hard to argue against the true beauty of a celebration under the stars.

While indoor weddings may boast the ability of easily accommodating overhead lighting, such as chandeliers, a bit of creativity can bring some light to the celebration, whether the pair is tying the knot under a roof or under the sky.

Outdoor weddings typically come with fewer restrictions than indoor weddings, especially when it comes to open flames. When tying the knot in nature, wax candles don’t pose the same fire risk as they would in an enclosed room so couples can be free to opt for traditional candles if they’re after calm flickering of a wicked candle.

As a fun alternative to standard wax candles, we’ve seen couples opting for submersible LED lights to place in centerpiece vases for a lovely glow. If there are trees in the proximity of the event space, LED string lights can be strung between branches for a magical effect reminiscent of lightning bugs. Pathways can be lined with lanterns, whether glass or paper, filled with LED candles for guests’ safety.

Tented receptions also offer a host of options for lighting – oftentimes, more complex lighting options, like chandeliers or uplighting, can be rigged up in a tent to create an elegant feel. Couples can choose to incorporate their wedding colors into washes or uplighting for even more of a dramatic effect. While candles and LED lights are simple enough for some DIY setup, the couple should consider bringing in a lighting expert for the more elaborate design options.

The beauty of an outdoor wedding is breathtaking – from the sun shining down on the ceremony to the stars glittering above the reception. You can help your couple do their part to light up the night by walking them through their lighting options, from romantic candlelight to dynamic uplights.
